IT Services for Schools has a rich background history as it is the latest incarnation of several support teams most recently formed from the IT Services for Schools team.
Between 1981 to 1984 the UK government subsidized half the cost of a Research Machines 380Z or BBC Micro computer. There was an increasing need to support schools to get the best out of the technology and enhance the repairs service to cover new equipment. The service was born in 1986 from the Wirral Education Department Audio Visual (AVA) service. This was the first technology support agency on Wirral dedicated to schools. This small team was initially responsible for repairing TV, video recorders, overhead projectors and tape recorders.
In response to the demand the team was expanded and new services were added. The service was rebranded as Technical Support Service (TSS).The team installed and supported all computer and audio visual technology in school including electrical safety testing, engineering support e.g. lathes and data networking.
The introduction of Local Management of Schools (LMS) in 1990 required a technical team to support the administration functions. The team chosen were responsible for the technology requirements of the Education department. They installed the first Apricot business computers into school offices with word processing, spreadsheet and database functions. In time schools were introduced to the SIMS solution, networking and the first IBM PC compatible computers.
The curriculum and administration teams were merged into TSS in 1999 and the services covered included support for libraries, sports centres, schools and the Education department.
In 2004 TSS was restructured and the majority of the team transferred into Finance department to be part of a central IT Service. This was last traded as IT Services for schools with a portfolio of products to support schools.
2016 is the 30th anniversary of the support service and fittingly IT Services for Schools is launched to continue with the purpose of working together with your school to achieve outstanding results.
